<p>REQUIREMENTS:                  The Town of Stallings, population 13,800, is seeking candidates for the position of police chief.  Successful candidate must have 10 years of law enforcement experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a mid/upper-level, managerial and supervisory role with preference given to candidates with prior police chief experience.  The department consists of 21 sworn officers; 6 sworn auxiliary officers; two administrative personnel and one crime scene technician.  The annual operating budget is $1.9 million.  Department desires a progressive community leader with high ethical standards and the ability to build/maintain effective working relationships. Candidates should also have a strong commitment to community-oriented policing, as well as strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.   Membership in the International Police Chief’s Association is a plus.  Applicant must have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a preference in criminal justice, police science, and/or related field, supplemented by advanced courses in police administration and considerable experience in law enforcement activities.  Also, must have completed minimum requirements established by the NCCJ Ed. &amp;  Trng Stds Commission for certified law enforcement officers or complete the minimum requirements within 6 months of accepting the position.  EOE</p>

MJA 695 Special Topics</strong></p>
<p align="center"><strong>Leadership in Dangerous Situations</strong></p>
<p align="center"><strong>Open to Non-Degree Seeking Students</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Course Description</span></strong>:  Leadership in dangerous situations creates additional practical and moral challenges for leaders in critical response organizations.  This course will bring together the most current research on how members of critical response organizations prepare for, respond through, and recover from critical incidents.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Course Format</span></strong>:  The course will make use of blended learning with online learning and in class sessions.  The first class session will be conducted on the Guilford Courthouse Battlefield, Greensboro, NC, and three class sessions will be conducted at the North Carolina Justice Academy (NCJA), Salemburg, NC.  The NCJA class sessions are conducted on Saturday 1400 – 1600 and Sunday 0800 – 1200.  Students are provided rooms at the NCJA at no cost.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Unique Course Events</span></strong>:  Students will examine the nature of the challenges of dangerous situations on a day long visit to the Revolutionary War battlefield of Guilford Courthouse, Greensboro, North Carolina.  Students will participate in a written assessment of their abilities to assess information and make decisions in critical incidents and will engage in both on line learning and critical incident simulations to improve those abilities.  Students will also engage in a team performance simulation in which they improve their abilities to build, participate in, and lead teams more effectively.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Student Prerequisites</span></strong>:  Students may take up to 9 graduate credit hours (3 courses) in a non-degree seeking status.  Students must possess a four year degree from an accredited institution and be a member of criminal justice organization.  Students must apply for admission to the course through an abbreviated application process.</p>

<p>On the first day of the seminar <a href="http://www.methodist.edu/mja/faculty.htm#bowman" target="_blank">Dr. Bowman</a> will review the latest research and practices critical response leaders can use to prepare for, respond to, and recover from critical incidents. Participants can choose to participate in a short assessment of their ability to assess information and make decisions under stress. On the second day of the seminar Dr. Bowman will lead participants on a terrain walk at the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/cowp/index.htm" target="_blank">Cowpens Battlefield</a> where participants will examine the battlefield events on 1781 for lessons that can be applied to current leadership challenges.</p>
<p>The first day of the seminar will be conducted from 9 am to 4 pm at the <a href="http://ncja.ncdoj.gov/" target="_blank">North Carolina Justice Academy</a> (NCJA) Western Campus, Edneyville, NC. Participants will be provided overnight accommodations at the NCJA at no charge for the night of April 5th.</p>
